KATJA BEGO

Katja Bego is a senior research fellow in Chatham House’s International Security programme and co-editor of the Journal of Cyber Policy. Katja’s primary research interest lies in topics related to the geopolitics and geoeconomics of emerging technology, European security, competitiveness and defence, and the future of warfare.

Her forthcoming book about the weaponisation of undersea communications cables will be published by Polity in 2026.

Prior to joining Chatham House, Katja led the Emerging Technology team at the UK’s Information Commissioner’s Office and was the head of the future internet portfolio at innovation foundation Nesta. While at Nesta, Katja led the €3 million NGI Forward project, the strategy arm of the European Commission’s flagship Next Generation Internet programme. She regularly advises policymakers and comments in the leading global media outlets on issues at the intersection of technology, geopolitics and security.

Katja holds an undergraduate degree in economics and political science from Wellesley College, and an MA in the History of War from King’s College London.
